I am pleased to announce the launch of the UK Austronesian Research Group
(UKARG); to announce the first seminar in our series; and to call for papers
for a one day workshop on Austronesian linguistics to be held in May.
Please circulate this message to any of your colleagues you think may be
interested.
1. UKARG
In response to an increasing level of research activity in Austronesian
languages and linguistics in the UK, UKARG has been launched with the intention
of bringing together scholars working in this field, to hold regular seminars
and workshops, and generally promote research into Austronesian languages and
linguistics.
Although the group is based in the UK, it is envisaged that researchers from
elsewhere in Europe and beyond will also participate.
UKARG meetings will be held in various locations around the UK. The group has
been convened by Dr Bill Palmer of the University of Surrey, and is
co-sponsored by the Surrey Morphology Group, University of Surrey, and by the
Department of Linguistics, School of Oriental and African Studies.

3. Seminar series
The UKARG seminar series will involve monthly talks by researchers working in
Austronesian. These will be about 40 minutes in length with about 15 minutes
discussion afterwards, and will typically take place on the second Friday of
each month. If you would like to present a talk in this series, or know of a
researcher working in some area of Austronesian linguistics who will be
visiting the UK or nearby and may be interested in presenting a talk, please

4. Inaugural UKARG seminar in April
The first seminar in the UKARG series will be held on Friday 8 April at 4.30pm,
at the University of Surrey, Guildford:

Note: This talk coincides with the end of a separate one day workshop at Surrey
on Daghestanian lexicology & typology. All UKARG visitors are welcome to also
attend the Daghestanian workshop, and to come to dinner afterwards. The
workshop begins with coffee at 9.30, with talks running from 10am to 4pm.
Speakers include Peter Austin, Andrew Spencer, Marina Chumakina, Anna Kibort,
Greville Corbett, Aleksandr Kibrik, Dzhalil Samedov, and Sandro Kodzasov.
Combined afternoon coffee for workshop participants and UKARG visitors will be
held from 4 to 4.30.
5. May workshop on Austronesian languages and linguistics - first call for
papers
UKARG will hold a one-day workshop on Austronesian languages and linguistics in
May. All are welcome.

Keynote speaker: Professor Malcolm Ross, Research School of Pacific and
Asian Studies, ANU
Formosan languages and linguistic

I would like to call for papers from all who would like to present a talk in
the workshop. Presentations may deal with any area of Austronesian language and
linguistics. Each paper will be 30 minutes long, followed by 10 minutes for
discussion.
If you would like to present a talk at the workshop, please send a title and
abstract to Bill Palmer at [log in to unmask] <mailto:[log in to unmask]
ac.uk> as soon as possible.
This workshop should be an interesting and stimulating event. I look forward to
seeing you there, and to your participation in UKARG in general. The group has
the potential to be a useful and successful forum, and I look forward to your
involvement.
