There are also several species of "grunts" (Haemulidae) in the Caribbean that vocalize. White grunts, yellow grunts, French grunts, etc. etc. etc. They are quite common.
I agree that local fishers are probably the best way to find out what is going on...although you have to be familiar with the local idioms of fish ID to use that information effectively.
