Senior scientist in fisheries management modelling
The Danish Institute for Fisheries Research, Department of Marine Fisheries, invites applications for a position as a senior scientist in fisheries management modelling.
DIFRES is a governmental institute under the Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Fisheries. The institute is organised into four departments: i) Marine Ecology and Aquaculture, ii) Marine Fisheries, iii) Inland Fisheries and iv) Seafood Research and conducts research in marine environmental issues, commercial and recreational fisheries and in seafood quality and safety. DIFRES acts as counsellor to the Danish Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Fisheries, other authorities, international commissions, the fishing industry and fishery organisations.
The Department of Marine Fisheries is located in Charlottenlund Castle just north of Copenhagen and at the North Sea Centre in Hirtshals. The staffs consist of 70 employees distributed among 35 scientists, 30 technicians and 5 administrative personnel. It carries out research and develops methods for providing advice on sustainable exploitation of marine living resources in following research areas: i) Ecosystem modelling, ii) Fish stock assessment, iii) Fisheries management and iv) Fisheries technology. The department is furthermore responsible for DIFRES's collection and analysis of data from commercial fisheries and scientific surveys.
The fisheries management section consists of 10 scientists with broad international net-work. It coordinates and participates in a suite of EU-funded and national research projects, which evaluate various aspects of the current and alternative fisheries management systems. To that end the group participates in the development of simulation models and software and performs research on the structure, dynamics and performance of fisheries management systems and the generation of scientific advice. The development of evaluation tools involves analysis of fish stock status, fishing industry structure, behaviour of fishers and analysis of management systems including the behaviour of managers/advisors. It covers analysis of biological, technological and bioeconomic data from extensive databases in relation to development of models and management evaluation frameworks. The management group participates in giving scientific advice on fish stock assessment and management through ICES (International Council for the Exploration of the Sea) and the EU-Commission.
Responsibilities
The successful candidate is expected to strengthen the research profile of the fisheries management section and development of its research area within the Department of Marine Fisheries. This includes particularly participation in the development of methods, models and software for management evaluation purposes. The applicant should fill a key role in this research area and contribute to national and international research projects as well as high level education within the scientific area.
The applicant is expected to: (1) cooperate with and integrate into a dynamic research environment and actively participate in the development of the research group, (2) publish results in scientific journals, produce project reports and participate in the application of new research projects, (3) apply her/his research results in practical advising on fisheries management issues, (4) apply various professional software tools, such as statistical packages (e.g. SAS, R) and programming languages (e.g. C++, Visual Basic), (5) act as supervisor for master and/or PhD students and contribute to high level teaching in cooperation with the professorial team at DIFRES, and (6) participate in international working groups/committees of ICES and the EU-Commission on fisheries assessment and management. Participation in interdisciplinary research projects involving scientists within fisheries biology, economy, technology, and sociology, and researchers from other disciplines is expected.
Qualifications
Required is a scientific background on high international level in research fields related to the work of the management group in DIFRES (but not necessarily from fisheries research). Well documented experience in modelling and development of scientific analysis methods related to population dynamics and bio-economics, and with broad operational knowledge of applied population and/or fisheries dynamics, mathematics, and statistics. The successful candidate should possess experience in simulation, statistical analysis, estimation and optimization in models of dynamic systems, as well as be experienced in computer programming. Proficiency in written and spoken English is necessary. Experience in analysis and evaluation of resource management and scientific advisory procedures and institutions is desirable. Knowledge about fishing industries and their performance is an advantage.
Salary and other conditions
Salary and terms of employment are in accordance with the agreement between the Danish Government and the Academics Union.
For foreigners there is a possibility to apply for low tax rate for a limited period.
Working place will be the fisheries management section in Charlottenlund, Denmark.
