In a message dated 3/16/2005 2:00:40 AM Mountain Standard Time,
[log in to unmask] writes:

City officials agreed with PETA
and stated, 'the fish was going to be put in alcohol, and that would
burn their lungs out.'

This is a bit frightening.

Here is another: In a full page advertisement in the NY Times a few years
back Grupo de Cien, a Mexican ENGO claimed that the plan for a proposed salt
works at Laguna San Ignacio, Baja California Sur, Mexico threatened the eastern
Pacific gray whale population because taking the salt out of the water would
make the lagoon waters fresh and baby whales would sink and drown. This was
picked up and reported as a fact - that the whales would sink - by the
science writers for in some US newspapers. I am not aware of any science writers
who questioned the statement. Presumably, a science writer should have some
technical training, but perhaps this is not always a requirement. Too bad, as
the public often accepts these pronouncements as truth, and politicians
respond with legislation. Such "best science" is difficult to debunk after it is
circulate in irresponsible media and become "fact."
