I would like to know if anyone knows any paper or work on aging cichlids based on scales instead of otoliths?

An avenue you could explore for any information on this might be to join the Cichlid-L Forum, a discussion forum on various aspects of Cichlid biology, run by Sven Kullander. The archives and details on how to join can be found at; http://listserv.nic.museum/archives/cichlid-l.html

Pete
