Some years ago I used scales to successfully age "tilapia" on the Kafue
Floodplain in Zambia. These were Oreochromis andersonii, Oreochromis
macrochir, Tilapia rendalli (I also looked at Tilapia sparrmanii).
The first three had fairly clear annual marks with that mark occasionally
missing in the first year.
Keep in mind that the area studied has a fairly cool period in May/June
with water temperatures dropping to below 15 C.
Some of this information is in:
Dudley, R. G. 1974. Growth of Tilapia of the Kafue Floodplain, Zambia:
predicted effects of the Kafue Gorge Dam. Trans. American Fish. Soc.
103(2):281-291.
Dudley, R. G. 1979. Changes in growth and size distribution of Sarotherodon
macrochir and Sarotherodon andersoni from the Kafue Floodplain, Zambia,
since construction of the Kafue Gorge Dam. J. Fish Biol. 14:205-223.
See also work by Jim Kapetski on the same species/area... FAO reports?.
Unfortunately I do not have copies of these papers with me.

Subject: Aging cichlids
Hi,
I would like to know if anyone knows any paper or work on aging cichlids
based on scales instead of otoliths?
Thanks
