Richard,
I asked my boss, the Alaska state vet, and got the following.
It appears to be a granuloma.  It would have been caused by
long-term irritation of some sort, probably of the
peritoneal lining.  The lack of structure is definitely
consistent with this diagnosis.  The source of irritation
could be chemical, biological, or physical.
