Dear Peter, I hope this e-mail finds you well. I write to you regarding a conference that UVI is hosting in late September. Just over a year ago, the University of the Virgin Islands was awarded $4.5 million from the National Science Foundation's Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research (EPSCoR) for the purpose of improving research infrastructure at UVI and within the US Virgin Islands. Approximately half of the project funding is devoted toward a research focus on Biocomplexity of Caribbean Coral Reefs (BCCR) with the aim of making UVI a center of excellence for research on coral reefs. I am the PI of BCCR and so am intimately involved with this project. The research focus areas emphasizes three themes including biodiversity, coastal oceanography and connectivity among reef systems. I am writing to invite you to be the keynote speaker at our first annual conference, September 23-24, 2005.
I have attached a formal letter of invitation which provides more details. I think your breadth of knowledge of coral reef systems, your current work on connectivity in relation to management and fisheries and having worked in the VI makes you an ideal speaker for this conference. I know that this is very short notice but I hope that you can spare the time to participate.
Please let me if you have any questions. I hope you can make it down for a visit. Cheers, Rick
P.S. In addition to the conference invitation I have attached 3 pdfs of recent papers including one resurrected chapter of my dissertation whose flame has not completely died out :-).
