Project Coordinator - Needed mid- September 2005 - flexible start date

ReefDoctor complete coral reef research, education and conservation
work within the local artisanal fishery in Ifaty, southwest Madagascar.
ReefDoctor is looking for an enthusiastic experienced person in the
field of scientific project management and/or marine conservation
work/research, to take up the position of Project Co-ordinator for
ReefDoctor in southwest Madagascar.

The core team consists of five science officers, one dive supervisor,
one local chef, two guardians and one boatman.
The applicant shall liaise with local community leaders every week,
arrange meetings, education and coral reef awareness events, ensure
ReefDoctor results and work is known locally, regionally and nationally,
coordinate staff activities, weekly re-supply and other logistics. The
applicant shall be expected to complete underwater surveys with science
staff and volunteers as other responsibilities allow. 

This contract is for a minimum of 12 months. The position is starts
in-country in the beginning of September 2005.

The job involves some of the following activities, though this list is
not exhaustive:
* Act as overall coordinator for the project, its activities, all
staff members (UK and Malagasy) and volunteers. 
* To ensure the wellbeing of volunteer research assistants
* To coordinate all UK and Malagasy staff members to ensure job
descriptions are fulfilled and targets reached. 
* Ensure all staff contracts and contractual responsibilities are
fulfilled.
* Ensure all budgets (science, food, equipment etc) are met and
finances are balanced every month.
* To act on behalf of ReefDoctor in all dealings with the IH.SM
(Toliara's local marine institute) and the University of Toliara 
* To act on behalf of ReefDoctor in all dealings with the Capricorn
Coastal Alliance projects and its members. 
* To write reports, minutes and agendas and relay them to ReefDoctor
UK headquarters every fortnight
* To act as a signatory on behalf of ReefDoctor 
* Participate in all underwater survey activities for the project 
* Participate in community liaison with village, fishermen,
educational facilities and other conservation organisations
* To uphold and enforce all regulations, disciplinary and otherwise,
set down by ReefDoctor. 
* To create duties and schedules on camp for all staff and volunteers
to ensure the overall cleanliness of project materials and equipment and
the hygiene of the staff and volunteers. 
* To uphold and enforce dive rules and regulations set down by the
Dive Supervisor 

Applicant Requirements
* Masters Degree or higher in a science field (preference to those in
tropical marine ecology) and/or experience in a relevant field,
especially community based conservation experience.
* Ability to speak, read and write French at an advanced level if not
fluently
* Have dive qualification of PADI Advanced or above
* Managerial experience with working in small teams in hot humid
environments
* Ability to work and live in basic conditions 
* Experience working in rural communities and different cultures
* Full driving licence
* Aged over 25
* Owns full dive equipment
* Financial ability to pay for the full cost of international return
flight to Madagascar and a domestic flight to the south of Madagascar
(after 9 months work this shall be reimbursed)
* Financial ability to cover standard medical and travel insurance
* Ability to work under pressure, to schedules and with limited
budgets
* First aid/EFR certificate (preferred, not essential)
* Computing skills - ability to use Word, Excel, Access, SPSS,
Powerpoint 

Applicant Receives:
* Reimbursement of full cost for your international return flight
after 9 months work
* Accommodation and food on site (Ifaty and Toliara)
* Free in-country transport 
* Diving medical and dive equipment insurance
* Work liability cover
* Salary of 100 per month
* Free internet access in Toliara
* Four weeks holiday pay
