I'm interested to know how many institutions would be interested in using the facilities (either on- or off-display) at Public Aquaria for research purposes? My colleague and I are looking to develop the potential for genuine research use of our off-show facility, and I felt it would be interesting to ask the members of this list their opinions on this matter.
As an example, currently we have an undergrad student from our local University carrying out behavioural studies on a species of Goodeid, and having access to our husbandry expertise means that she can concentrate on her observations and data without having to consider any of the operational issues around keeping her study specimens in optimal condition (plus of course we have a significant reserve of experience of our own in various aspects of the likely behaviour of the species concerned, that she was able to have free access when developing the project proposal).
It would be very helpful to know what resources would make people more likely to use such facilities if anyone feels there has been a barrier to this in the past, and I'd be happy to help anyone on this list investigate the possibilties further if this triggers off an interest in further exploration of the potential.
Personally I am primarily interested in research related to freshwater fish spp., but I would be delighted to help wherever possible with other areas.
As a final request, please do contact me if your institution enages in, or has an interest in developing, significant research directed towards freshwater organisms.
