This comment initiates a discussion thread for the Working Group on
Waste Management and welcomes information about the WG and suggestions
of future activities for 2007 and 2008

The planning of the establishment of this WG was done by Dr Jaya Nair
(NR-AU) and Mr. Jagannath Venkataramaih (NR-IN) on 18-19th Sept 2006
in Mysore and Bangalore. Reports of their efforts are now available

Sustainable waste management with special reference to developing countries

1.Mission of WG-Waste Management
 To define and develop guidelines for sorting, disposal, treatment
and handling of treated residue.
 To disseminate developments and processes in waste management to
interested parties through Education, training and information
materials
 To validate ESTs in developing countries and prepare an inventory of
ESTs for replication in most needy societies

2. Activities
 Compilation of technologies available for solid waste sorting,
handling and treatment
 Validation of technologies for ESTs
 Social and Economic considerations of all technologies
 Quality Assurance Procedures
 Occupational and Environmental safety on handling different types of waste
 Environmental Impact Assessment of Waste Management
 Reassessment of existing standards/ guidelines for solid waste and
recommendations for revision or new guidelines for solid waste
management
 Education and Training at University graduation
 Research and Development of technologies
 Reports and Documentation
 Release of quarterly newsletters

3. Actions to be taken
3.1. Seek for ratification of the action plan now proposed at WG IOBB
3.2. Before the start of the visits the concept of IOBB conference was
mooted by NR, Australia
3.2.1. To propose the Ist IOBB International Conference on Sustainable
Biosystems, July 6-9, 2008, Perth, Australia
3.2.2. Finalize the conference title and the committee members for the
2008 July conference
3.2.3. Select the topics of various sessions for the conference

3.3. To release quarterly newsletter on Waste management.
3.3.1. During the concluding part of the visit at CST, IISc, an idea
of a news letter was proposed. IOBB WG may consider publishing an IOBB
magazine with the contributions from all Working Groups within IOBB.
3.3.2.It was tentatively decided that issue wise editors share the
responsibilities. Dr Chanakya, ASTRA, IISc could be requested to take
up the first issue. NR India and NR Australia could assist Dr
Chanakya.
3.3.3. Dr Basavaraj, Principal, Kalpataru Institute of Technology,
Karnataka, India offered support for web support in these newsletters.
3.3.4. There is a need to invite articles and news for our newsletter
– 4-6 pages to start with. Each release will have one major article
along with news, achievements and advertisements.

3.4. Recruit more members and strengthen the group
3.4.1 There are already 15 more professionals from academics, research
and extension organizations who are the newly paid members of IOBB for
the year 2007.

3.5 Develop opportunities for face to face interactions with National
Representatives and Executive members at least once a year

3.6 Develop research, academic, social and community networking
between groups and institutions

3.7 To initiate Community Based initiatives along with the ongoing
developmental works through IOBB by way of sharing ESTs in Organic
Waste Management and Urban waste Waters Management.

this is certainly a very much welcomed and popular topic and I am
pleased to initiatives of the NRs from Australia and India. We can
also see that this WG has the largest number of volunteers who will
active contribute to (planning and organizing) and the follow ups of
the proposed activities.

On behalf of the 4 member executive committee (Jacky Foo, Marin
Berovic, Paul Totterdell and Horst Doelle), I approve the
establishment of the IOBB Working Group on Sustainable Waste
Management.
