Deterring Plagiarism A lecture at KTH with Jude Carroll 10.00 - 12.00 on Tuesday May 2 in Salongen, KTHB, Osquars Backe 31.
How common is plagiarism? We don't know for sure but the statistics do point to a significant increase, year on year. How common is the worry about plagiarism?
This lecture will address:
* rethinking the definitions of plagiarism, collusion and cheating
* designing out easy cheating options
* considering how best to inform students about regulations
* teaching students the skills of academic discourse and citation.
Of course, not all students will find these measures sufficient deterrent so institutions must consider the benefits of tightening security arrangements, discouraging lecturers from turning a blind eye and probably introducing electronic detection tools.
Jude Carroll is Assistant Director of the Centre for Excellence in assessment at Oxford Brookes University. Jude is the author of A Handbook for Deterring Plagiarism in Higher Education, published in 2002. She is a member of the board of the government-funded Plagiarism Advisory Service and has a particular interest in the needs of international students who are learning the rules of the new UK academic 'game'.
