Dear Listmembers,

Please spread the word about the following Research Aoosicate positions 
on the Woods Hole Trophodynamic Modeling Project.  There are two openings.
Position Description & Statement of Work:*
The main focus of this work will be to evaluate various model outputs 
and scenarios that better incorporate trophodynamic and related 
ecological processes into the living marine resource management 
process.  The successful applicants will select and evaluate a set of 
multi-species and ecosystem models.  More explicitly, these models will 
incorporate a variety of ecological considerations, particularly 
trophodynamics, and evaluate management scenarios, biomass tradeoffs, 
and how these considerations alter biological reference points (RPs). 

Executing the comparison of single species (SS) and ecosystem-based (EB) 
approaches will involve parameterizing various extant models (e.g. SS 
with add-ons, multi-species (MS) models, Aggregate models, Ecosystem 
models), choosing appropriate example ecosystems or sub-systems and 
focal species, running the models, and compiling model output from them 
(or collecting it from extant work).  Comparisons will then be made to a 
series of decision criteria, at least initially using standard fisheries 
and protected species biological RPs, to those values obtained from 
classical assessment models that were executed without these 
considerations.  This evaluation of incorporating ecological and 
particularly trophodynamic models will differ from similar efforts in 
that it will directly compare currencies commonly used in fisheries and 
protected resources management in the U.S. Fishery Management Council 
system while examining the effects of management scenarios across a wide 
range of the biological hierarchy.

There are two positions for this project, each responsible one of two 
main elements.  One will explore SS models with add-ons and MS models 
and their associated outputs.  These models focus on a stock and in 
simplified form are commonly used in the U.S. fishery management 
system.  The second will explore aggregate and ecosystem models and 
their associated outputs.  This second group of models would focus on 
broader groups beyond just a stock or species and provide a different 
(holistic, integrated and concurrent) perspective, albeit one in the 
same currency as the stock-based models.

An advanced degree in fisheries, natural resources, ecology, 
aquatic/marine sciences, biological sciences, oceanography, mathematics 
or related disciplines (PhD preferred).  Ability to work in a standard 
office environment with common computer-user skills.  Demonstrated 
quantitative, integrative, database, and writing skills also required; 
computer programming skills not required but a positive.  Ability to 
work with minimal supervision, meet or exceed deadlines, integrate a 
wide degree of quantitative outputs, draft reports/manuscript, organize 
disparate pieces of information, and understand complex mathematical 
models, complex databases, complex socio-political-scientific systems a 

The positions will be located at the NOAA NMFS NEFSC Laboratory in Woods 
Starting in low 40's; commensurate with qualifications and experience.
