ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
The Regional Freshwater Specialist for South America is responsible for
delivering conservation science tools, technical support, and training
to Conservancy staff and partner NGO's in the field of freshwater
biodiversity conservation. S/he is a catalyst for developing The Nature
Conservancy's approach to identifying freshwater conservation priorities
across all of South America. S/he will fulfill this role by guiding
conservation planning efforts, advising operating units on establishing
freshwater-related programs and projects, and providing technical input
for the development of freshwater threat abatement strategies. Works
closely with regional conservation staff and other conservation
scientists inside and outside the Conservancy to coordinate service
strategies and conservation approaches and integrate training needs and
opportunities. Participates in the development of work plans and program
budgets as appropriate. Coordinates with South America Conservation
Region External Affairs staff to provide technical input for multi-site
and multi-scale strategies for conserving freshwater biodiversity.
The Regional Freshwater Specialist coordinates with international and
U.S. domestic scientific initiatives and, as appropriate, with other TNC
conservation programs and initiatives (especially TNC's Conservation
Strategies Group and the Great Rivers Partnership staff). Works to
develop and facilitate the implementation of flexible yet standardized
methodologies and approaches to freshwater conservation
priority-setting, and to provide biodiversity data needed for
conservation projects.
The Regional Freshwater Specialist assists in developing new financial
resources and partnerships to support freshwater conservation in the
South America Conservation Region and provides technical input to
fundraising proposals and assists in solicitation as needed.
The Regional Freshwater Specialist is supervised by the Science Director
for the South America Conservation Region.
KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS:
* Advanced degree in natural sciences/natural resource planning or
equivalent professional experience, and at least 5-7 years related
experience in natural areas planning or management.
* Expert knowledge of freshwater ecology, conservation biology,
and public policy. Preference will be given to candidates who have
experience in applying this knowledge to set and achieve conservation
priorities.
* Demonstrated knowledge of the conservation needs and practices
of the pertinent region
* Excellent communications in English and at least one of the
languages of the countries of the Region (Spanish/Portuguese), orally in
and writing. Preference given to candidates who can communication three
languages (English, Spanish, Portuguese)
* Understanding of and relevant experience in the culture of the
country/region.
* Successful experience in developing, directing and managing
multiple projects.
COMPLEXITY/PROBLEM SOLVING:
* Analyze situations, evaluate alternatives and implement
solutions.
* Designs, implements and directs multiple projects, setting and
meeting deadlines.
* Work is diversified and may not always fall under established
practices and guidelines.

RESPONSIBILITY/OVERSIGHT -FINANCIAL & SUPERVISORY:
* Financial responsibility may include working with a budget to
complete projects, negotiating and contracting with vendors, assisting
with budget development and/or meeting fundraising targets.
* May serve as a team leader for assigned projects and coordinate
the work of others, particularly in a decentralized and multi-disciplinary
environment.
COMMUNICATIONS/INTERPERSONAL CONTACTS:
* Work with and communicate with a wide range of people - to
identify research needs, present technical concepts and methodologies and carry
out field technical assistance.
* Solicit program support through clear written communications,
including proposal writing and other written materials - as needed for
fundraising activities.
* Work in partnership with other organizations in a collaborative
or advisory role.
WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL EFFORT:
* Willingness to travel 30-40% of the time.
* Work requires occasional physical exertion and/or muscular
strain. Work involves several disagreeable elements and/or exposure to job
hazard's where there is some possibility of injury.
