  Dear Colleagues:
A new SIL meeting is coming in Montréal August 2007 and I have taken the challenge of organizing a special session on the Ecosystem Approach to Inland
Fisheries, I hope this idea will be appealing to you so we can have many interesting presentations which will hopefully help us to understand where is the scientific
knowledge and how we can bring it to governments for policy making and better management.

Please spread the word and lets try to have a good and productive session

The list of SIL 2007 Special Sessions has now been posted online at www.sil2007.org (under the Programme tab).

  --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A Special session for SIL 2007

The implementation of an Ecosystem Approach to Inland Fisheries: knowledge needed for policy and management.

A political commitment to implementing the ecosystem approach (EA) into fisheries management resulted from the 2001 Reykjavik Conference on Responsible Fisheries in the Marine Ecosystem. The need to incorporate the ecosystem approach in responsible fisheries was consolidated at the World Summit on Sustainable Development in Johannesburg 2002, and FAO Code of Conduct for Responsible Fisheries adopts the principles of an ecosystem approach to fisheries and is helping the countries to reach an achievement target by 2010 mainly in marine ecosystems.
However the implementation of the EA to inland fisheries has not attracted nearly as much attention even tough this activity have a large impact on world rural people and poorest countries where it shows its sharper growth specially in Asia reaching 6 million tons in 2004. On the other hand the information on inland fisheries captures is probably quite underestimated especially in developing countries. The present session hopes to gather scientists and information from different kinds of inland fisheries such as the great lakes in Africa, in North America, the large river basins and reservoirs in Asia, in Latin America etc.
The major goal of this session will be to asses scientific and technical information available for the implementation of the EA to inland fisheries considering that fishing activity not only impacts on the target stock, but on other parts of the ecosystem as well. EAIF main purpose should be to plan, develop and manage fisheries in a manner that addresses the multiple needs and desires of societies, without jeopardizing the options for future generations to benefit from the full range of goods and services provided by freshwater ecosystems.
  ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

  best regards
