I have a student who's trying to clear and stain a wrasse (genus Cirrhilabrus) for a class project. Other students have had good success using the same protocol (adapted from Cailliet, Love, and Ebeling) on cyprinids and centrachids but her fish isn't picking up any color from the final stain (we're using 1% Alizarin red in KOH), though it's been soaking for a week. I'm wondering if this could be because it's a labrid. (E.g., do they need a xylene soak to remove excess lipids, as a salmonid does?) Does anyone on the list have any advice or experience clearing and staining marine fishes?
Thanks, Duncan Elkins University of Georgia
