SENIOR RESEARCHER STOCK ASSESSMENT & ADVICE 
 
  
 
Wageningen IMARES (www.wageningenimares.wur.nl) is the national institute for strategic and applied marine research. We focus on fisheries management, environmental protection and spatial use of the seas and coastal zones. Our core competencies are (marine) ecology, nature protection, water quality, contaminant risks, biological production and marine governance. Our research methods comprise (sea going) fieldwork, experiments, lab work, data collection, data management, modeling and simulations. Wageningen IMARES employs 180 people representing a broad variety of scientific disciplines. The institute is part of Wageningen University and Research Centre and has strong links with the academic world.  
 
  
 
The Fisheries Department of IMARES (50 people) is responsible for monitoring and analyzing fish stocks and fisheries and we provide advice to different clients on sustainable harvest strategies. The two main types of fisheries that we focus our research on, are pelagic fisheries (mainly in the North East Atlantic  and West African waters) and the demersal trawl fisheries in the North Sea. We have a dynamic team of experts who are trained in stock assessment, management strategy evaluations and advisory tasks.  
 
  
 
Job description: You will be expected to be an informal leader of the team of demersal assessment experts in IMARES. You would take a lead in the scientific discussions within our institute on this subject matter, and take responsibility for the quality of the assessment team and of the results they produce. Active participation is expected in international discussions on stock assessment and advice. Core to your role will be the development of the research strategy to keep IMARES at the forefront of fisheries assessment methodologies and marine governance. You will publish both in peer reviewed journals and in research reports. We are looking for an ambitious person who is keen to further develop our position and team at the international forefront of science, assessment and advice. In other words: you will be working in a dynamic, stimulating and interesting environment, doing work that is very relevant to society. 
 
  
 
Requirements: A biologist/ ecologist with a quantitative background and a keen interest in population dynamics and fisheries research. You must have good people skills and strong analytical skills, including experience with simulation models and analysis of large datasets. Knowledge of stock assessment methods, SAS and R is essential. You should be a leader in the field but also a team player. You should have good communication skills and be able to cope with stressful situations. 
 
  
 
Conditions of employment: We offer an interesting and challenging job with ample space for bringing in your own initiatives. IMARES has an explicit personal development policy. Depending on the role you can play, the function level will be Researcher 2 or 3 (scale 12 / 11; minimum salary € 2813,-- per month, maximum € 4967,-- per month before taxes for a 36 hrs working week). The job is based in IJmuiden.
