Seminar with Cyrus Mody: The Long Arm of Moore´s Law: The Microelectronics Industry
and Nanotechnology
Time: Thursday, October 16, 2008. 10.15AM-12PM.

Cyrus C. M. Mody holds a Ph.D. in science and technology studies from Cornell University
and a bachelor’s degree in mechanical and materials engineering from Harvard
University. He currently holds a position as an assistant professor at the Department of
History, Rice University, and prior to that (in 2004-2007) served as the program manager
for nanotechnology and innovation studies at the Center for Contemporary History and
Policy at the Chemical Heritage Foundation.
Mody has published widely on the history and sociology of materials science,
instrumentation, and nanotechnology. His research focuses on communities of scientists
and engineers which specialize in nanoscale phenomena and have formed inter-communal
linkages to form the field of nanotechnology. Their members orient to each other through
a common technique or instrument (e.g. the atomic force microscope), a common
material (e.g. carbon nanotubes), a common end-goal (e.g. replacing silicon transistors
with organic molecule-based electronics), a common institution (e.g. the Gordon
Conference on the Physics and Chemistry of Microfabrication), or a common discipline
(e.g. surface science). Since these communities usually contain members from
government, industry, and academia, they are a prime site for studying how state and
commercial objectives are bound together with modern research. Mody is presently
working on a book titled Instrumental Community: Probe Microscopy and the Path to
Nanotechnology.
The seminar is arranged by the department of Science & technology studies, Gothenburg
University; the department of Industrial management, KTH; and the department of
History of science & technology, KTH.

Högre seminarium med prof. Kerstin Wickman, Konstfack: En dold yrkeskår - Kvinnor
som industridesigner
Tid: Måndag 20 oktober 2008, kl.10.15-12.00
Plats: KTH, Avd. för teknik- & vetenskapshistoria, Teknikringen 76, nb.
Kerstin Wickman är professor em. i design- och konsthantverkshistoria på Konstfack,
Stockholm. Hon har arbetat som professor och innan dess lektor på Konstfack sedan
1970-talet, har varit redaktör på tidskriften Form i trettio år och var
utredningssekreterare i Form- och designutredningen (2000). Wickman har medverkat i,
redigerat eller författat över fyrtio böcker och kataloger om design och konsthantverk.
Mönsterritning, inredningstextil, barnboksillustration och konsthantverk betraktades i
slutet av 1800-talet som som accepterade kvinnliga yrkesområden. Genom att engagera
sig i den utrustning som utvecklades kring och för köket kom kvinnorna att tränga sig in i
teknikens värld och påverka gestaltningen av kökets inredning och redskap. De agerade
som nutidens industridesigner, men utan att betraktas som riktigt professionella.
Kvinnliga designer har fram till slutet av 1980-talet begränsats av vad som ansetts som
lämpliga
arbetsuppgifter för kvinnor. Men en rad kvinnor har under tidigare decennier hittat
strategier för att kunna ägna sig industridesign och alltså ta plats inom en yrkeskår,
dominerad av män och "manliga" föreställningar och värderingar". Idag utbildar sig fler
och fler kvinnor till industridesigner. Vad innebär det för yrket?
