Researcher in population dynamics and evolutionary ecology

IFREMER

Institut Français de Recherche pour l’Exploitation de la Mer (IFREMER),
whose registered offices are located in Paris, has 26 offices spread around
the French coastline (including overseas counties and territories). Its
missions are to research, assess and valorise ocean resources (and allow for
their sustainable use), to improve the methods of monitoring, prediction,
protection and enhancing of the marine and coastal environments, and to help
the economic development of the maritime sector. Main international
collaborations: IFREMER actively participates in the work of the European
Union and in the work of the Marine Board of the European Science
Foundation. It is also a member of international organisations in its area
of expertise (e.g. OSPAR Convention, International Council for the
Exploration of the Sea). It contributes to international research programmes
(climate, environment and biodiversity). It is actively involved in numerous
bilateral agreements (Japan, U. S. A., Canada, Australia, European countries).

1/ Position to be filled as soon as possible

The Fisheries Resources Department of Manche-Mer du Nord (DHMMN) has a
long-standing experience in stock assessment and represents IFREMER at
international working groups (ICES, STECF, RACs). Besides, the Department
carries out studies on behalf of French fishing industry (stock assessment,
gear selectivity, etc). In this context, the position holder will be in
charge of:
-	stock assessment (demersal and flat fish) in the Channel and North Sea and
representing IFREMER at ICES working groups   (WGNSSK et WGSSDS) ; 
-	representing IFREMER at the STECF group on mixed fisheries, and the cod
recovery plan ;
-	relations with the French fishing industry and French administration
(regional/national levels) and international instances (RACs,) with regards
to the sustainable exploitation of living marine resources.
The post-holder will also be expected to carry out research work (20-30% of
workload), to answer the Department's needs in terms of fisheries science
expertise and high-level scientific research. Desired skills encompass
evolutionary ecology so as to study the effects of adaptative changes on
stock demography and life history traits (with important implications in
stock restoration and sustainable exploitation), the reversibility degree of
these adaptative changes (with implications in term of management : Common
Fisheries Policy), as well as the alteration of the genetic composition of
stocks affecting biodiversity.
 
2/ Skills & Experience
PhD (Fisheries Science, Marine Ecology, Numerical Ecology, etc).	
Population dynamics, modelling, R software, and advanced statistics
Evolutionary ecology, Theory of life history traits.
Fluency in English and French is essential.
Professional experience : Minimum 3 years stock assessment would be an
advantage, and so would be analytical skills in fishing effort and fishing
fleet behaviour. 	
Professional qualities :Team work and contact with the fishing industry.

4/ Working conditions
The position will be based in Boulogne-sur-mer, the first fishing port of
France, and which is located 2h from Paris, Brussels and London. The
Fisheries Resources Department of Manche-Mer du Nord is a young and dynamic
team composed of 40 staff members (permanent, fixed-term contracts,
post-docs, PhD students), and is involved in a number of European and
international research projects.

Full-time (38 h/week) and permanent (44 days annual leave). The post-holder
will be expected to travel often (France and abroad), and may participate to
scientific surveys at sea. 

Salary range EUR 30-40,000 pa (benefits included), depending on experience.
