Hai,

I am a fish researcher from India (tropical country). I worked on Indian Freshwater fishes. In tropics, we also followed the Point method by Hynes. In tropical fishes, pharyngeal teeths are present for surface feeders, bottom dwellers and grazers too. Here Point method is widely used to analyse the gut contents. Not only cyprinids, other families also have the same characters. By the gut content analysis and field observation the niches are segregated.

But I am unsure, how far my point of view fit to temperate fishes. If you are interested, I am ready to share few more points/references in this aspect.

Dr. Sankaranarayanan
