Protocols used for the french national monitoring of PCBs also specify -20C to store fish tissue sample.

  Chris, we have been monitoring PCBs and other organics in fish tissues for almost 20 years and our protocols specify -20C.   You are correct however that fatty acids require -80C asap, and it is best to keep them in the whole body form (frozen of course)prior to homogenization.

  Folks

  I'm hoping that the Fish-Sci community can give me the benefit of their expertise.

  I have been asked to provide some fish samples for subsequent analyses of PCBs and Polychlorinated dibenzodioxins (dioxins).
  I had the impression that samples, once taken, should be stored at -80C to prevent loss of labile compounds.
  I follow this approach for fatty acid work for example, and it seems to make sense to me for any compounds that are likely to be associated with lipids.

  However, one of the labs I have contacted regarding the analyses clearly stated that freezing at -20C was sufficient.


  Comments/pointers to literature/procedures etc much appreciated!
