***Masters Degree Project in Fish Ecology at the University of
Toronto***

 

We are looking for a motivated M.Sc student interested in environmental
change and conservation issues to undertake a project beginning in
September 2009 (with some opportunity for field work in the upcoming
summer if you are available).  

 

The main goal of the project is to compare the ability to detect change
in fish populations using established vs. newer statistical approaches
that have not yet been rigorously evaluated in fisheries situations.
Several different datasets will be analyzed to assess the consistency of
the results.  

 

The student will develop skills in statistical analysis and handling of
large datasets (using R) in a supportive environment.  In addition, the
student will conduct some nearshore fisheries survey work on Lake Huron
in summer 2010. 

 

The project will be based in the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary
Biology at the University of Toronto's Mississauga Campus.  The student
will be co-supervised by Prof. Nicholas Collins
(http://www.utm.utoronto.ca/~w3bio/faculty_and_research/collins.htm)
from the University of Toronto and by Dr. Erin Dunlop
(http://www.bio.uib.no/evofish/esd/index.php) from the Ontario Ministry
of Natural Resources (OMNR).  

 

The student will have good opportunities to develop contacts within
OMNR.  Guaranteed yearly income levels for Canadian M.Sc. students at
Toronto are $22,956 (comprised of a combination of research support,
stipends, and 140 hours of teaching).  Students interested in more
