Lettres reçues d’Océanie
Edited by Charles Girard S.M. (KARTHALA Publishers)
In 1836, the Holy See entrusted the evangelization of Oceania to the recently founded Society of Mary (Marists). Father Jean-Claude Colin, newly elected superior general, sent 117 missionaries to Oceania between 1836 and 1854. The missionaries described what they found; they kept journals; they told how they were welcomed; they spoke of their difficulties; they recorded the work they undertook...
Opening their archives, the Society of Mary has edited in ten volumes all of the 1,365 letters that the missionary fathers wrote to the Marist administration between 1836 and 1854. These letters came from the islands of Oceania : New Guinea, the Solomon Islands, Vanuatu (formerly New Hebrides), New Caledonia, Fiji, Wallis and Futuna, Tonga, the Samoan Islands, New Zealand and Australia. These letters are truly a significant part of the heritage, historical and cultural, of the peoples of the Pacific, which this critical edition now makes available to the wider world.
Since April 2009, KARTHALA Publishers have undertaken the distribution of the 10 volumes of the series dedicated to the Lettres reçues d’Océanie (9 volumes for the 1,365 letters written by the Marist missionaries between 1836 and 1854 and a volume containing an index to allow for efficient use).
