All,

I just received a phone call to correct my statement regarding Aqui-S in that it is no longer approved for use through the US Fish and Wildlife Service INAD program in the USA. Apparently there are also some carcinogenic concerns with it as with clove oil.

Magnus (and others),

In the USA fish anesthetics used on food fish are regulated, and only approved anesthetics may be used legally. Currently only "Finquel" and "Tricaine-S" (both are versions of MS-222) are approved for use on food fish (after a 21 day withdrawal period) by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Aqui-S does not yet have full FDA approval but can be used on food fish in the USA through the Investigational New Animal Drug (INAD) program with the US Fish and Wildlife Service. Aqui-S is approved for use in New Zealand, Australia, Chile and the Faroe Islands.

The FDA's Center for Veterinary Medicine issued this document regarding the use of clove oil as an anesthetic for fish:
http://www.fda.gov/downloads/AnimalVeterinary/GuidanceComplianceEnforcement/GuidanceforIndustry/UCM052520.pdf

The carcinogenic warnings are also for the humans handling the clove oil!

Cheers,

George

Hi All,

We are doing a project on intertidal fish and want to knock them out so that Chris can tag and measure them with minimal stress to the fish.
I've used clove oil in the past (cheap and easy to get hold of) but have recently been told by a home office inspector that this went out with the dinosaurs!

I've also been told that in the UK it is ok to use clove oil or 2-phexyethanol to kill fish but not to anaesthetise and bring round and that we should use MS222 (Tricaine methanesulfonate) instead.

Can anyone offer some advice/suggestions?

Cheers, Magnus
