My experience with eastomer tag that I used for juvenile bluegill.
Initial size -- 15g
Final size --  100 g
study period: 18 months
Elastomer tags were used to mark 75 fish for individual identification based on color combination and tag location.
Colors used: green, blue, red and pink.
Could read tags for only ~20 fish at the end of the study.
Over time, color started fading because of tissue deposition. Also you can have some error in reading tags because of confusion between colors (blue &green, pink & red). Some experience with tag before the real experiment can help you reading tags better.
This tag can be used for short term study.
