  Course Announcement


    Modeling habitat for fish and invertebrates with MesoHABSIM

Rushing Rivers Institute, in collaboration with the Polish Institute of 
Inland Fisheries, offers the next MesoHABSIM Course in Europe. The 
course will take place between *May 24th and May 27th 2011*, in EKWOS 
Conference and Recreation Center in Gre;biszew, 37 km east of Warsaw.

The MesoHABSIM approach is designed as a support tool for the planning 
of restoration and management of running waters. Using computer 
simulation, it offers a new impressive level of detail and accuracy in 
fully capturing significant portions of riverine environment and aquatic 
communities. This physical habitat simulation model describes the 
utility of instream habitat conditions for aquatic fauna, allowing the 
user to simulate change in habitat quality and quantity in response to 
alterations of flows or river morphology. The software integrates field 
collected data with biologic literature based data, and enables the user 
to extrapolate the impact of multiple variables upon the river such as 
rainfall, water withdrawals, dam removals and climate change. SimStream 
includes multiple reporting options, such as time series charts, drop 
box selection of sites for comparison, and the overlay of data onto 
satellite imagery, thus providing the user with comprehensive and 
flexible tools for interpretation.

Modeling with the help of tools such as MesoHABSIM, allows for more 
adequate planning of instream flow and river restoration scenarios by 
predicting future outcomes or references with help of quantitative 
simulation that offers a more cost effective approach than the typical 
try-and-error selection of river restoration measures. This advanced 
planning tool is what you need for the application of a Water Framework 
Directive and adaptive river management process.


    Credentials:

The method has been widely applied across the USA and more recently in 
Europe to provide information for instream flow management as required 
by laws and regulators. For industrial users it offers more 
scientifically definitive answers regarding the costs and risks of 
future operations. MesoHABSIM has been peer-reviewed and published in 
scientific journals, by the Instream Flow Council and recently included 
as a part of the Ecologically Sustainable Water Management (ESWM) 
framework by The Nature Conservancy. In the state of New Hampshire it 
has been written to the state law as a water Quality Standard for the 
Souhegan and Lamprey River.

    Who should attend?

Environmental consultants, researchers, conservationists and agency 
personnel interested in sustainable management of water resources.  With 
the exception of basic knowledge of computer software and river ecology 
no particular skills are necessary.  To accommodate a wide range of 
participants we offer a two level course:

      four days in-depth application training including software and
      field data collection in nearby river

between the fields and forests of Mazowsze Region. The amenities include 
not only comfortable rooms and spacious conference facilities, but also 
numerous sport activities for in- and out-doors, such as horse riding, 
tennis, billiard, carriage rides in the nearby forest as well as 
playground for children and small animal farm. Food is just supreme and 
vodka is Polish.
