Category : 30. Post-Doc researcher
Action : FISHREG
Application must be delivered before 6 Dec, 2010 - 23:59:59CET
Short description of activity:
The FISHREG action of the Maritime Affairs Unit of the JRC aims to support the Common Fisheries Policy through research and technological support to Directorate General Maritime Affairs and Fisheries. Scientific advice and fisheries data collection are two key activities of the action. JRC is looking for a scientist to improve further fisheries data collection in the Mediterranean Sea and prepare for integration of data for the Black Sea. Quantitative scientific stock assessments will be used to provide biological and economic indicators and reference points to support fisheries management decisions, as the Commission needs to establish long-term management plans for relevant Mediterranean demersal and small pelagic fisheries. The successful candidate will work inside a team, and will be expected to contribute to data collection, data quality and scientific advice through the Scientific, Technical and Economic Committee of Fisheries (STECF), the Subgroup on the Mediterranean Sea. He/she will also be expected to publish in the peer-reviewed literature and co-author project proposals for collaborative research.
Required profile:
Fisheries biologist or marine scientist with a PhD degree or 5-years relevant research experience. At least 3 years of hands-on experience in scientific stock assessments and data collection schemes are required, preferably for the Mediterranean Sea. IT, data analysis and relevant statistical skills are required as the job involves quality-checking and consolidating complex data sets, doing assessments and other analyses. Previous experience with the DCR/DCF data collection frameworks is required, as is also good knowledge of the EU fisheries sector and the CFP. A good record of publications in the peer-reviewed literature is a plus. Experience in scientific advice for fisheries management at the international level would be very appreciated. Good communication and writing skills in the English language are necessary.
