Herring should most probably feed on plankton, adults abundantly eating
zooplakton. This sholdn´t be difficult to process if you work with fresh,
not frozen individuals. Fixing stomach contents on alcohol 5 to 10 %
solution is best for preservation. Also considering sectioning only the
anterior part of digestive tract, mostly stomach contents which
 should be composed of hole distinguishable food item you shold count or
weigh depending on size of these items.
