Hello, everyone!
Dr. Neil Aschliman, a shark and ray taxonomy expert, has written a guest
post on my blog about the proposed revised taxonomy of manta and mobulid
rays. In short, manta may no longer be a valid genus, and both species of
manta ray may actually be mobulids. The post explains the basics of (and
importance of) taxonomy, as well as the conservation implications of the
new classification scheme.
It's an informative, important and entertainingly written post. I encourage
you to check it out. Dr. Aschliman is happy to answer your questions in the
comments section of the post.
