Dear list,
the following postdoctoral position is open for application at Ifremer:
"Development of mathematical tools to assess the abundance of data-limited species of elasmobranch."
A sustainable management of fisheries requires reliable assessment on biomass and fishing pressure towards the different fish stocks. In Europe, all elasmobranchs stock assessed by ICES are data deficient which limits assessments to monitoring trends in a context where in 2012, it was recommended for 25 of these stocks to reduce catches or targeted fishing. This project aims at improving those stock assessments.
The current position involves some data mining carried out on French datasets (landings, VMS, effort, measurements from observers at sea on commercial vessels, scientific surveys). These datasets have been routinely collected by IFREMER and its institutional partners (APECS, MNHN, fishing industry) but their use for stock assessment has not been extensively explored so far.
Most of the work will focus on adapting and/or developing models and/or statistical tools that will make the best use of those datasets to assess the status of those stocks. Uncertainties related to data abundance and quality will have to be taken into account. In a later stage of the work, these tools will integrate additional datasets from countries which fleets are operating in the same areas in order to test their robustness and to validate them in the perspective of a regular use within related fish stock assessment working groups (ICES, STECF).
Required skills. - PhD in fishery science, population dynamics or related fields. - Strong knowledge in statistics and modeling. - Strong skills in R programming - Skills in fish stock assessment desirable but not mandatory
The full-time position will be based at the IFREMER Fishery Science and Technology laboratory in Lorient. Funding is available for 1 year with a possibility of non-renewable additional 6 monthes depending upon performance and funding.
- Salary around 32 000 euros/yr (gross). - The appointment comes with social benefits such as health care and retirement plans.
