Hi,

Where do you put the VIEs? If you can put them between the fin-rays in the dorsal/anal fin the chance is higher to se which colour it is under normal light. I know this has been done in juvenile salmonids. In my experience, fish (at least juvenile brown trout) do not like the UV-lamps used for detecting VIEs, so the behaviour may be disturbed if you shine UV-light on them. If you cannot see VIEs then I would guess you cannot see acrylic paint either - so some kind of external tag may be necessary... but external tags (e.g. beads or melted monofilament nylon line [see http://www.plosone.org/article/info%3Adoi%2F10.1371%2Fjournal.pone.0023565#pone-0023565-g004 for the nylon-line-method]) have been used for many different species, often smaller than what you describe, but maybe barramundi are particularly sensitive.

Is there no possibility to just keep track of each individual on the film without tags?

Best regards,
Joacim Näslund

Hello everyone,

I am a Master student of the University of Tasmania, Australia. I am doing a
project of observations of social interactions of juvenile barramundi (4-5 cm). I
tagged the fish individually using VIE tags and tried to record video footage
using
video cameras (IP 540P, Compro Technology, USA) but I failed as the cameras
can not see the colour of VIE tags under fluorescent lights. If these lights are
turned off and only UV light is used then the colour of VIE tags are highly
visible,
but the background of the footage is grey and the VIE tags are seen as white
strips (please see the attached file for detail).

I have thought of some other methods using acrylic paint and surgical threads
with coloured beads. However, the former is thought to be toxic to the fish,
and
the latter causes mortality.

I am not a savvy camera user, so if you have any ideas about whether the
cameras I am using are able to see the VIE tags or about other tagging
methods
for such small fish, please share them with me.

Thank you, and I am looking forward to hearing you soon.

Best regards,
Dinh
