There are issues and then there are modes of approaching those issues.

Of course plastics pollution in aquatic environments is an  
appropriate issue for Fish-Sci. Perhaps not all members would agree  
but I think that the processes by which the general public form  
opinions about marine pollution are also fair game for a list that  
discusses the science of fisheries.

To be science, however, the discussion should focus on rational,  
dispassionate reasoning from empirical evidence. Maintaining that  
standard while exploring the means by which policy choices are made  
can get very difficult but, if we don't try hard, I fear that the  
essential character of this list will be lost amidst agenda-driven  
rants. I think that my previous posting put my toes very near the  
line and perhaps over it. I figured I should start with a warning,  
lest I provoke others to take a discussion far beyond the bounds of  
science.
