Research Assistant Professor, Quantitative Fisheries Science (5-Year, Term Position) Department of Applied Ecology, NC State University Responsibilities. This position is a Research Assistant Professor in Applied Ecology, 12-month, non-tenure-track, for a five-year term within the Department of Applied Ecology at NC State University. The incumbent will develop an active research program to address agency needs in the area of fisheries and applied ecology. The position is supported by funding from the NC Wildlife Resources Commission and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and the faculty member is expected to develop research topics with these agencies and other cooperators. Research emphasis will be placed on species of management concern to agencies, including federally protected and other at-risk species. Graduate student advising and involvement with research are expected, as is teaching 1-2 courses per year in the incumbent’s areas of expertise. Qualifications. Doctorate in Fisheries, Wildlife, Conservation Biology, or closely related field. Expertise in contemporary and quantitative approaches (e.g., advanced modeling) to address applied fisheries management and conservation issues. This includes knowledge and abilities in areas such as modern and traditional field and laboratory fisheries techniques, natural resource management tools and manipulations, assessment methods, population and community dynamics, biology and ecology, human dimensions, and policy. Willingness and experience interacting with agency biologists and administrators, academic colleagues, undergraduate and graduate students, and the public is essential. Setting. The Department of Applied Ecology is a growing, vibrant, and productive unit within the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences and a supportive, collaborative academic setting. Faculty strengths are in the areas of ecology, fisheries, aquaculture, conservation biology, environmental toxicology, quantitative methods, and related fields. Research in these fields drives a strong, well-funded graduate program, effective extension and outreach, and graduate and undergraduate mentoring, teaching, and advising. The Department hosts faculty in the NC Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit, SE Climate Science Center, and Center for Marine Sciences and Technology. Faculty also participate in the intercollegiate Fisheries, Wildlife, and Conservation Biology undergraduate and graduate program. North Carolina resources span the Appalachian Mountains, foothills and piedmont regions, through the coastal plain to estuarine sounds, barrier islands, and the Atlantic Ocean, which support diverse communities.
