I can't answer your specific questions, but I remember there were some
papers published (early 80s or late 70s) showing that selenium antagonized
the effects of Hg in fish. I also remember that selenite and selenate etc
have VERY different toxicities - the form of the chemical is critical.
This had probably not been terribly helpful, but....
