Dear Concerned Citizen,
Salmon are a potent symbol of the quality of life and the unique environmental and economic benefits we enjoy here in the Pacific Northwest. We all have a stake and a role to play in restoring our region's wondrous and once plentiful runs of salmon and steelhead to health. Do you want to learn more about salmon, share your views with others, and help develop an action plan for restoring and protecting salmon populations? If so, we invite you to attend the Forum on Sustainable Fisheries on September 14-15 in Seattle, Washington. This is an excellent opportunity for you to join scientists, environmentalists, fishermen, and other concerned citizens in a facilitated workshop setting to exchange information on the status of the resource and salmon-based economies, and to identify tasks and priorities for rebuilding salmon and steelhead populations to sustainable levels.
The Forum is being organized by For the Sake of the Salmon and the Sustainable Fisheries Foundation -- two of many organizations seeking to restore salmon populations in the Pacific Northwest. We promote discussion, cooperation, and the development of practical solutions to the complex problems related to salmon management. Our focus is not rhetoric, politics, or litigation -- we stress biologically based and economically sound approaches to the challenges facing us. Our perspective and involvement in fisheries issues in the United States and Canada puts us in a unique position to build consensus and garner public support for a coordinated, regional approach to restoring our salmon runs.
Earlier this year, the Sustainable Fisheries Foundation sponsored a successful international conference which drew over 500 scientists, environmentalists, sport and commercial fishers, tribal leaders, and policy makers to Victoria, British Columbia. Through the submission of scientific papers and specially facilitated workshops designed to identify consensus recommendations, the conference produced the first draft of a document entitled Towards Sustainable Fisheries: Building a Cooperative Strategy for Balancing the Conservation and Use of West Coast Salmon and Steelhead Populations.
The challenge before us now is to share the Sustainable Fisheries Strategy report with the public, refine it based on public input and additional scientific review, and then ensure its effective implementation. The Forum on Sustainable Fisheries is a first step in this direction. Working with people like yourself, we will discuss the science and values behind the Sustainable Fisheries Strategy, solicit additional input, and develop an action plan for effective implementation. We invite you to join this important effort.
Participants may either pre-register by fax or may register at the event.
