Dear friends and colleagues:

Copies of the report < Towards Sustainable Fisheries: Building a Cooperative
Strategy for Balancing the Conservation and Use of Westcoast Salmon and
Steelhead Populations > are now available for public review and comment. An
abbreviated Table of Contents for the report is appended below. The 80 page
report comprises summaries of workshops that were part of the Towards
Sustainable Fisheries conference held in Victoria, B.C. in April of this
year. The conference brought together more than 500 scientists, managers,
resource users, conservationists, and other interested parties from the
United States and Canada to exchange information on a broad range of
fisheries-related topics.

During the conference, a series of facilitated work group sessions were
convened to provide people with an opportunity to express their views on a
number of topics related to fisheries management and societal values.
Participants were encouraged to explore issues associated with harvest
management, habitat protection and restoration, community involvement,
salmon and steelhead production, and institutional and regulatory
structures. Work group participants identified a shared vision of
sustainable fisheries, factors that currently constrain our ability to
achieve this vision, and actions necessary to overcome those constraints.
The recommendations that emerged from the work group sessions form the
backbone of the Sustainable Fisheries Strategy - an integrated set of
principles and guidelines for restoring salmonid populations to sustainable
levels.

The Sustainable Fisheries Strategy report can be obtained by contacting the
Sustainable Fisheries Foundation in either the United States and Canada. To
receive an electronic copy of the report, send email to either Cleve Steward
at [log in to unmask] or Don MacDonald at [log in to unmask] An
attached file (Wordperfect for Windows 6.0 format) containing a copy of the
report will be sent to you via email.

Hard copies of the report are also available. Contact the Foundation at
either of the addresses listed below to receive a copy. A $5 (US) copying
and mailing charge will be assessed for each copy requested. Conference
participants will automatically receive a copy free of charge.

The facilitators and staff of the Sustainable Fisheries Foundation wish to
take this opportunity to thank all who contributed to the Sustainable
Fisheries Strategy report. We invite you to take the time to review this
draft and send written comments no later than December 1, 1996.

Thank you.
