The Product
Task Force is an exciting new two volume CD-ROM series for Mac and Windows that features the biology, ecology and economics of the conflict over preserving salmon in the West (Columbia/Snake River salmon are the focus). It is well suited for college level course in biology, ecology and economics where it may be used as a case study of a premiere example of environment vs. jobs and jobs vs. jobs conflicts. Salmon policy makers will want to add this to their reference collection.
The series contains over 90 minutes of digital video. It also includes the following reports:
* Return to the River, Independent Scientific Group, NWPPC * The Cost of Doing Nothing, Institute for Fisheries Resources * Economic Well-Being and Environmental Protection in the Pacific Northwest, PNW Economists * Economic Analysis of Four Federal Dams on the Lower Snake River, Lansing * Economic Impact of Steelhead Fishing and the Return of Salmon Fishing in Idaho, Reading
Hydropower, aluminum refining, barge transportation, irrigated agriculture, cattle grazing, mining and logging are all major contributors to the economy of the West. Although these activities may directly or indirectly affect salmon stocks, they offer jobs to thousands of people and make major contributions to the economy. As a consequence, many of the suggested alternatives to preserve salmon that may impact enterprise have been met with strong opposition. The technical reports offer opportunities for students to analyze data and to critically evaluate the methods and conclusions drawn by researchers. Extensive population and economic data is provided in the software program. Students will evaluate the opposing solutions offered by industry and natural river migration advocates in order to develop their own management plan for preserving and restoring salmon populations.
Although the extensive guide provides a wealth of instructional investigation materials, the proposal to decommission the Lower Snake Dams is given special attention. Task Force also includes an introductory video tape and we include position statements on specific issues by Direct Services Industries, Save our Wild Salmon, Northwest Power Planning Council, Idaho Rivers United, Columbia River Alliance, Pacific Coast Fishermen's Association, Army Corps of Engineers.
