I am a freshwater fisheries biologist with a concern. Radio-transmitting
or ultra-sonic tags are often attached externally to fish. Usually tags
cannot be retrieved for re-use (or removed from the fish) since fish are
seldom recaptured.
...
Is there a way to get timed-release of tags so they could float free,
before the batteries die? Batteries last from 30 days to 3 years.
...
Any components should be waterproof, reliable, suitable for temperatures
of 0 to 25C, low in battery consumption, small and streamlined, and
preferably inexpensive. Materials which corrode over time (for example,
sutures) are successful for periods of days, but have been unreliable in
longer studies.
