Grober here.
I feel I've been misrepresented by Kevin's comments. I did not say assert that "going straight into a Ph.D. program, instead of doing a master's, is a better strategy for obtaining a research position..."
what I wrote was "If you want an ACADEMIC POSITION, you are much better off going straight from your Bachelors into a PhD program.
I went on to say that getting a master's can be a good stepping stone towards a PhD, but that most top notch (in the Grossman sense) programs do not care for their MS students the way they do for their PhD students (especially wrt financial support). I do not support this policy, but have seen it many academic institutions.
Cheers - MG
