About use of TED's:
For Julie Robins and other interested friends from list:
TED's use in Brazil becomes 1994 and its mandatory; none
experiments were condcuted. The model use - most commonly - is a variety
of Super Shooter designed by NOAA for the Gulf of Mexico fishery. The
reasons pointed for this mandatory application have positive effects on
the North and Northeastern regions where turtles are commonly taken by
fishery fleet. Otherwise, there're no reasons for this use in the
Southeastern region (where I live and it is my "research site"). Turtles
there are scarcey caught in shrimp fisheries but often taken in gillnets.
Fishermen accuses TED on being a by-catch reductor, also a shrimp and as
the regulatory is poorly done, few boats effectively uses this device.
        Cheers for all.
