I doubt there is any sort of reference. The following is the reasoning I
have lived with for quite a few years.

The cost of monofilament nets has allowed them to almost completely take
over the market. When you get a rip, throw it out and tie in another
panel. The braided nets can be rapaired, but cost more, are bulkier, and
weigh more. It also takes (some) expertise to mend them.
