This is the first announcement and a call for papers for a symposium entitled "The Ecology,
Life History, Management and Culture of Lake Sturgeon" to be held at the 59th Midwest
Fish & Wildlife Conference in Milwaukee, Wisconsin December 7-10, 1997.
The lake sturgeon (Acipenser fulvescens) which once ranged widely throughout the central
portion of North America is now considered threatened or endangered throughout much of its
former range. Over the last decade there has been increasing interest in understanding,
managing and rehabilitating this species by numerous states, provinces and private groups.
This symposium will provide an excellent opportunity for lake sturgeon interests from across
North America to present information and exchange thoughts and ideas on lake sturgeon
ecology, life history, management and culture. It is fitting that this symposium will be held
in Wisconsin as this state has a long history of active lake sturgeon management and as has
some of the best remaining natural populations of this species. Participants will not only be
able to engage in interesting and useful discussions, but will also have the opportunity to
review various provincial and state lake sturgeon management plans which will be available
for review at the symposium.
To be considered for review and acceptance, all abstracts should be submitted by June 30,
1997. Instructions for preparing and submitting abstracts follow.
All abstracts must be submitted on electronic media, however one hardcopy should
accompany the electronic version. No hardcopy only submissions will be accepted. Authors
should use either IBM based MS Word, Word Perfect or ASCII formats. Abstracts can be
mailed on a disk or sent as e-mail. The encryption scheme used should be identified for
e-mail copies of abstracts. Abstracts should be formatted using the following example:
Title (< 16 words): Density Dependence in Bluegill Stocks in the Upper Midwest
Abbreviated Title (3-5 words): Density Dependence in Bluegill Stocks

Text of Abstract (250 words maximum): Abstracts will be peer reviewed for acceptance into
the symposium. Any abstract not following submission guidelines will be rejected.
Acknowledgement of receipt will be given through e-mail or by postcard. Authors will be
notified of acceptance by August 15, 1997. Only 2x2 slides will be allowed as presentation
media.

Paper Presenters: Presentations will be 15 minutes long with an additional 5 minutes
allocated for questions. We will provide the following audio visual equipment: 35 mm slide
projector, screen, pointer, and lighted podium.
Poster Presenters: Poster sessions will run concurrently with paper sessions. Instructions
for poster displays will be sent to presenters of accepted posters.
ABSTRACT GUIDELINES
CONTENT: ABSTRACTS SHOULD INCLUDE:
1. Why you did the project - place the project in perspective by telling the reason for doing it.
2. What you did and how - explain enough of the methods so the results can be fully understood.
3. What you found out - clearly state the important results.
4. What it means - state your conclusions and relate them back to the original problem.
DISKETTE COPY FORMAT:
1. Use MD-DOS or Windows readable 3.5" high density diskettes.
2. Label diskette with author s name, abbreviated title, and text format (either Word Perfect,
MS-Word or ASCII).
3. A hardcopy of the submitted abstract should accompany the disk.
4. Provide the text in either of the formats below:
A. Word Perfect or MS-Word File
a. The title in boldface type
b. Use hard returns between the title, first and second author s name, affiliation, address,
and text of abstract.
c. Asterisk the presenting author s name
d. Italicize scientific names.
B. ASCII (or DOS text file)
a. Use a blank line between the title, first and second author s name, affiliation, address, and text of
abstract.
b. Use asterisks following presenting author s name.
c. Use the at symbol (@) preceding and following scientific names.
E-MAIL SUBMISSION:
1. Send either encrypted Word Perfect, MS-Word or unencrypted ASCII files.
2. Follow directions for either the word processing or ASCII files from above.
3. Describe the type of encryption used in either the subject line or in the e-mail.
ABSTRACT SUBMISSIONS: The diskette copy must be postmarked no later than 30 June, 1997 to
be considered. All e-mail submissions must be received by midnight July 1, 1997 to be considered.
You will be notified immediately upon receipt of your abstract. If you don t receive notification of
receipt of abstract within 10 days, please contact the appropriate program chair. All abstract
submittees will be notified by August 15, 1997 if they will be included in the program. Papers
presented at the 1997 annual meeting of The Wildlife Society in Snowmass, Colorado, or the 1997
annual meeting of the American Fisheries Society in Monterey, California will be given lower
priority for inclusion in the program.
