Research Administrator I (position #02132)

Pay Range $3,318.92 to $5,652.10 per month

Minimum Qualifications:

A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major course
 of
study in one of the physical or natural sciences or mathematics and four years
 of
professional experience in one of the physical or natural sciences or
 mathematics,
one year of which must have been in a supervisory capacity: or a master's degree
from an accredited college or university with major course of study in one of
 the
physical of natural sciences or mathematics and three years of professional
experience as described above, one of which must have been in a supervisory
capacity; or a doctorate from an accredited college or university with a major
 course
of study in one of the physical or natural sciences or mathematics and one year
 of
professional supervisory experience as described above.

BRIEF POSITION DESCRIPTION

Direct the operation and administration of the Florida Marine Research
 Institute's
Tequesta Field Lab.   Duties include but are not limited to: purchasing,
 personnel,
facility maintenance, budget preparation, and report writing.  Direct and
 participate
in the research activities of the Fisheries Biology Program in Tequesta with
emphasis on program development, data analysis, and publication.  Research
activities include the analysis of population data such as age and growth,
reproduction, and catch and effort data.  Schedule workloads and teams to
complete fisheries assessment projects in a timely manner.  Ensure coordination
of scientific activities across sections and work units.  Supervise assigned
 staff.
Field and administrative duties may require hours in excess of 40 per week,
 nights
and weekends.

Required entry-level knowledge, skills and abilities:

Knowledge of:   management practices, principles, and procedures associated
with marine fisheries; methods of data collection and analyses; grant
 management;
personnel management and supervisory practices, principles, and procedures;

Skill in;  the use of field and laboratory equipment; the analysis of fisheries
 population
data, such as age and growth, reproduction, and catch and effort data; writing
 and
publishing technical reports and peer-reviewed manuscripts;  communicating
 effectively
both verbally and in writing.

Ability to:  establish and maintain effective working relationships; safely
 trailer and
operate vessel less than 25' in length; assess budgetary requirements;  plan,
schedule, and coordinate work assignments; effectively supervise others .

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:   VALID DRIVER'S LICENSE AND completion of a
small boat safety course within probationary period.

PREFERRED SELECTION CRITERIA
A candidate with academic, work experience, or both in the collection and
 analysis
of life history and catch and effort data for fisheries management purposes.  A
 candidate
with experience interacting with regulatory and management councils and
 commissions,
as well as experience with federal funding programs such as MARFIN, Seagrant,
 and
US Fish and Wildlife Aid in Sportfish Restoration.  A candidate with experience
 in
obtaining extramural funds.
