Where: Department of Fish & Wildlife Resources,
University of Idaho

Start Date: August, 1997

Topic: Freshwater molluscan ecology in the Snake River,
Idaho

The mollusc Utah valvata (Valvata utahensis) in the
Mid-Snake River, Idaho, has recently been listed under the federal
Endangered Species Act (ESA). Management agencies must ensure that
ongoing river uses, hydro management, and water withdrawal do not place
this species at risk. Since little is known of its distribution, life
history, and specific habitat requirements, the Bureau of Reclamation
is initiating a multi-year study to expand the scientific understanding
of the species. If found, one or two other ESA-listed mollusc species
could be similarly studied. The study will be a rigorous field and
laboratory effort over riverine and reservoir reaches of the Snake
River in southeastern Idaho. The successful applicant will be part of
a larger team working with the University of Idaho and the U.S. Bureau
of Reclamation.

The Assistantship will be funded for 3 years with starting
