Actually, red tide as a cause of marine mammal mortality was fairly well
documented this past year.  In 1996, over 100 West Indian Manatees off
the west coast of Florida died, apparently as a result of pulmonary
and/or dietary exposure to brevitoxins produced by red tide (Gymnodinium
breve).
