Master's degree studentship 1997-1999
Bioindicators of estuarine health in the Hawkesbury River
$17,000 pa Master of Science (by thesis)
Applications are invited for an industry-UTS sponsored studentship,
closing May 30, 1997. Funding is provided by Hawkesbury-Nepean
Catchment Management Trust, Cowan Creek Catchment Management
Committee and UTS Industry-link program.
The Hawkesbury-Nepean and other river systems in Australia are under
increasing threat from urban and agricultural pollution. Estuarine regions,
in particular, are sites of accumulation of pollutants and direct human
disturbance. Estuaries support diverse and productive biological
communities and are sites of thriving commercial and recreational
fisheries.
This project will involve the development and evaluation of early-warning
biomonitors of estuarine health in the Hawkesbury estuary, north of Sydney.
Specifically, it wilL
* evaluate previous studies of biological communities in the
Hawkesbury estuary that relate to health of the system,
* investigate the merits of "rapid-assessment techniques" currently in use
for freshwater regions for monitoring marine and estuarine areas
* establish a research program that evaluates several potential biomonitors
of estuary quality, using sites of different water quality and community
structure
* adapt useful biomonitors for use in community-based Streamwatch and
other monitoring programs
Applications
THE STUDENT SHOULD BE AN AUSTRALIAN CITIZEN OR
PERMANENT RESIDENT, have an undergraduate degree in Science, and
have a demonstrated ability to conduct and present research (e.g. an Honours
degree, published papers, conference presentations). Applications addressing
these points, and including a curriculum vitae should be sent by May 30,
1997, to
