PFLEGER INSTITUTE OF ENVIRONMENTAL RESEARCH (PIER)
An excellent career opportunity is available with a new research
institute for a motivated individual. Over the next 2 years PIER
will be constructing a large permanent facility in Oceanside,
California. PIER will consist of a new marine hatchery, laborator-
ies, offices, and an adjacent public aquarium. The aquarium and
educational programs will be used to highlight work conducted by
scientists of the institute.
An individual is needed to assist in ongoing research projects
studying: (1) the biology and culture of giant seabass (Stereo-
lepis gigas); (2) the biology and culture of market squid (Loligo
opalescens); and (3) sound production in marine fishes. Over the
next 2 years this work will be conducted at a temporary laboratory,
also located in Oceanside. The successful applicant will be
expected to perform menial technician level duties over the next
2 years, but rapid advancement is possible for individuals with
exceptional work ethics and specialized skills in one of the fol-
lowing: development and implementation of marine educational
programs; development and maintenance of public displays; marine
fish culture (including culture of algae and rotifers); squid
biology and/or culture; hydroacoustics; aquarium curatorial; dive
instructor. The ability to work well with others is essential;
SCUBA certification and research dive experience desired. Post-
docs who are willing to take a step backwards in order to get
ahead may be considered (the next 2 years could be used to develop
proposals and line up funding for position as senior scientist in
your field).
