I think the journal of experimental biology has already cracked this
particular nut. They pay $25 US for each review, but only if you return
the review within three weeks. They also pay for subsequent reviews of
revisions. In addition, they give you the option of waving the $25
royalty and selecting from their back issues of special symposia volumes,
often $100+ values. I have added quite a few nice volumes to my library
through this incentive program. Needless to say, my response to a JEB
manuscript in my mailbox differs from that I usually reserve for
the appearance of unexpected work. The time from original receipt to
publication tends to be in the 6-9 month range for this journal.
