there are quite a lot of  colleagues who are working on european barbels.
For example, last weekend the fourth (!) International Round Table Barbus IV
took place in Thessaloniki, organised by Prof. Economidis. The contributions
of the third Round Table are published in the FOLIA ZOOLOGICA 1996, Vol. 45,
Suppl. 1. This special issue provides some interesting information on the
biology of european barbels (furthermore, you will find a lot of
cross-references in the literature cited).  
In Belgium, Dr. J.C. Philippart and Dr. E. Baras did a lot of research on
Barbus barbus and they are really worth contacting. E. Baras wrote an
excellent PhD thesis on habitat selection of B. barbus. Here is the

de l'espace chez le barbeau fluviatile, Barbus barbus (L.). - Cahiers
d'Éthologie 12. It's in french and the publication is - among other things -
available in Liège, in the Zoological Museum. The adress of the working

In my former working group, we examined the habitat selection of 0+cyprinids
of the River Sieg, a tributary to the River Rhine. B. barbus was one of the
most important species in the community. I think Joerg Freyhof, the leader
of our group,  will readily provide some information on the habitat
selection of 0+barbel. I'm afraid he has no e-mail yet.

Gary Grossman wrote that perhaps the working group of Prof. Schiemer might
have information on habitat selection of barbel. This is definitely true and
you should at any rate contact them (I know that at least Irene Zweimueller
and Gerold Winkler are subscribers of this list).
