        INTRODUCTION TO BIOSTATISTICS AND SAMPLE DESIGNS

     DATES:             July 15 - 16, 1997

     PLACE:             Holiday Inn - Winchester, Va.
                        (I-81, exit 313A from the south, exit 313 from
                        the north)

     LODGING:           The workshop rate is $49.00 plus tax for a
                        single or double room.  Workshop participants
                        should make their own reservations by June 20,
                        1997, to guarantee this rate.  Be sure to
                        mention AFS workshop when making reservations at

     WORKSHOP

     COURSE OBJECTIVE:  To provide an introduction to basic
     biostatistical and sampling design concepts relative to common
     analytical problems for aquatic resource monitoring and applied
     research issues.  The emphasis will be on applications to types of
     fish population and angler sampling techniques frequently used by
     state biologists.

                B.  Parametric vx nonparametric statistics
                C.  Type I and Type II errors
                D.  The concepts of bias and precision
                E.  Using the relative standard error to evaluate data
                        quality
                F.  Determination of sample size requirements
                F.  The basis of statistical decision making

                A.  Randomization (Probability Sampling)
                B.  Definition of Sampling Units
                C.  Stratification
                D.  Sample Size Allocation
                E.  Multi-Stage Designs

     Session II:        Applications to Real Life Problems

     "real life" statistical and sample design problems and data to be
     discussed and worked on in this session.  This information should
     be forwarded to the workshop contact by June 20, 1997.
